Inspire Yourself to Successful Weight Management

Graffiti "And so I choose to begin again"

Piroska Cavell explains why abstinence and control doesn’t work and how self awareness gives us all the inspiration we need for weight management success.

When I think about weight management, there’s one word that chills my blood. Control. Throughout the year, so many people are dieting, running, lifting, dancing, cycling their way to their target shape or weight thinking that they are in control.

Then along comes Christmas and all the wheels fall off their plan. Someone’s pushing food onto their plate, a drink into their hand all the while someone else is telling them how they need to do more, do less, do it differently.

Other people’s words can have an extraordinary power and derail someone’s commitment to healthy, effective decisions. It can beademoralising time for the control-seeking dieter. They think they’ve failed and spin out to a yo-yo experience of putting the weight back on until they next feel the urge to chase for control again.

It’s really not fair, because although they had stuck to the plan, they just didn’t have a supportive framework in place for when they weren’t in control of their day.

There is an antidote to the control method of weight management though, and it is holistic.

Holistic weight management(the basis of the Slim Sese plan) means looking at all aspect of your lifestyle and establishing patterns and general habits that will overall keep you on track to your goals.

It means that you’ll be better equipped to navigate Christmas excesses and get back on track the next day. And if friends or relatives belittle your new habits or weight management goals, you’ll know their words are their problem; not yours.

When challenges occur or you reach a plateau in your weight loss or gain, instead of being dissatisfied or thinking you are unsuccessful, an holistic approach encourages you to reflect on why you started on your weight management journey in the first place.

Give yourself a high five for deciding to build new habits. It takes practice and repetition to build a new habit, but if you slip, that’s okay. You are looking for overall consistency not perfection. You are ready to get back on track to how you live now.

With an holistic approach to the way you manage your weight, you can be happy to treat Christmas as the exception because your goal was never to abstain from everything. Instead, your aim is to recognise what just enough means for your body.

That can mean just enough of Christmas feasting to enjoy the moment, and just enough time to jump back on the weight management wagon so that you can make just enough of a weight loss to improve your physical and mental health.

It only takes a 5% shift in body weight to make a significant difference to your health outcomes – whether you are seeking to gain or lose weight.

So although an holistic approach means looking at all aspects of your lifestyle and modifying or flexing your goals accordingly, you’ll have the benefits of lots of little successes along the way.

That’s all the motivation I need to let go of control and say hello to an holistic understanding of your personal weight management journey.
